From Farm to Family: A Solution to Hunger
$2,235,000
In a region that produces some of the nation's most beautiful and nutritious food, one in six of our neighbors, 47,000 people, cannot access the fresh harvest surrounding them. Rising food and living costs make it harder and harder for families to access fresh, nutritious foods.

The Need
The SLO Food Bank nourishes over 45,000 San Luis Obispo County residents monthly through a network of 70+ nonprofit partners, direct distributions to rural communities, and specialized programs for children and seniors. As demand grows, food prices rise, our state and federal food programs are being cut, and additional pressure is put on an already strained system. Support is needed to continue sourcing food from local farmers, ensuring fresh, regional products reach needy families while strengthening the local economy. At the same time, nearly 20% of the county’s Spanish-speaking population face language and cultural barriers that prevent them from accessing critical food resources. Strategic investment in outreach, food supply, and sustainability is essential to ensure everyone in our community can access the nutritious food they need to thrive.

The Outcome
Through initiatives that cultivate trust, expand food access, support local farmers, and ensure long-term sustainability, the partnership between Must! Charities and the SLO Food Bank will deliver measurable results that address the increasing needs of our neighbors and promote the overall well-being of our community.
- Create immediate impact for Spanish-speaking community members through investments in bilingual outreach.
- Sustain reliable food access for 70+ nonprofit partners amid rising costs and growing demand.
- Kickstart ongoing support for local farmers and food producers through a dedicated Local Harvest Fund addressing federal and state funding cuts.
- Fuel long-term giving and growth by investing in tools that deepen donor relationships and engagement that strengthen giving.

The Impact
For decades, people across San Luis Obispo County have come together to ensure every neighbor has access to nutritious food. By 2030, the Food Bank estimates it may need to support over 55,000 individuals each month and distribute more than 7,000,000 pounds of food. This is a 22% increase in the number of people fed and a 42.8% increase in the pounds of food distributed. Spanish-speaking families will experience increased trust and improved access. Local nonprofits will receive steady support despite the rising cost of food. Investments in locally sourced food will support our farmers and boost the regional economy. Together, we are addressing hunger at its roots and building a healthier, more food-secure future for everyone.
