The Food Bank Coalition's Childrens Programs (Real Food for Real Children)

must! charities is collaborating with the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County to take a small & proven meals program to virtually every eligible child in the north county. With the partnership of other local non-profits that serve these children, we are providing healthy meals and snacks in their own neighborhoods. As a mobile project, we reach the most remote places in our county.

1 in 5 children in the North County live in poverty (2,500 children in total). These children are particularly susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, poor nutrition and many forms of cancer.

While schools work to address the issue, these programs impact only part of the problem during the school year, and they meet only the bare minimum USDA nutrition requirements. More than 6,000 children in North County are on free or reduced lunches during the school year and go without in the summer.

This kick-start for the Food Bank Coalition will not only benefit kids in the North County, but it will also have the ripple effect for kids throughout the entire county.

Our Commitment

  •    Contribute $220,000 to the project to help the program become 100% sustainable within 1-2 years of June 2013.
  • Increase the number of children fed from 500 to 1,500+ by summer 2014, eventually ensuring that all 6,124 identified children in need in the north county will have access to healthy food when they are not in school.
  • Expand the project beyond hunger and educate families on nutrition in a variety of ways.
  • Recruit community volunteers to expand the program to include enrichment opportunities for these children in addition to food (literacy programs, farming & gardening, art, nutrition, medical & dental care, and more).
