must! charities announces its new, four-year collaboration and over $253,000 investment with   Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo (SLO) County. Must! charities will come alongside Big Brothers Big Sisters with financial & business expertise that will allow them to have a greater impact in the region where it is needed most.  The goal is to expand youth mentoring in an underserved region, making sure children, who ask for assistance from an adult, receive the help they need.

Currently there are 34 youth from the northern region of SLO County, waiting to have access to a mentor.  With local drug problems increasing among youth, local gang-related issues continuing to raise concerns, and limited budgets with ever increasing caseloads for family advocates servicing families in need, today’s youth are facing adversity in their lives and searching for an outlet of hope and happiness.  Big Brothers Big Sisters nationally proven model shows the opportunity for success; however, limited resources and other obstacles have forced Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County to focus on maintaining youth services, rather than volunteer outreach and recruitment in the North County.

“After wrapping up a 10 month vetting process we recognize both the need for increased mentoring and the abilitychad and fernando_180x160 copy and desire Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County has to address these needs in the North County,” shared Becky Gray, executive director of must! charities. “This is our largest collaboration we’ve embarked upon since our inception project in 2012, and while we are just making the announcement publicly, we are thrilled at the positive response the community has given us thus far, as this project will truly require the ‘it takes a village’ mentality to make it a success.”

must! charities is committed to invest in funding for a full-time community based coordinator to create and sustain mentor matches in the North County, as well as other funding needs and business expertise to see this project through. The gifting from must! charities is driven by benchmarks set forth by both organizations, and strategically decreases over the course of the 4 years allowing Big Brothers Big Sisters to sustainably continue to support the need and growth for the North County region well after must! charities’ commitment has been fulfilled.

“The generosity of must! charities will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters to grow the number of youth we serve in the North County by 400%,” stated Anna Boyd-Bucy, executive director of the SLO County Big Brothers Big Sisters. “The funding by must! charities allows for systemic change within the community. A nationwide study conducted for Big Brothers Big Sisters by Harris Interactive found that adults who were involved as children in our program, were better educated, wealthier and reported stronger relationships with their spouses, children and friends. Must! charities is making that possible for local youth.”

Everyone Is In It For the Right Reasons

IMG_3842 (2)Rob Osterbauer has a hard-earned and impressive resume.  He joined Heritage Oaks Bank as Executive Vice President, Market Area President in May 2012 and was promoted to Chief Lending Officer in November of 2013. In addition to leading the Bank’s commercial relationship banking activities including the commercial and agriculture lending teams, Rob is responsible for business development throughout San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties. Prior to joining Heritage Oaks Bank, Rob spent seven years at Rabobank, where he most recently managed the bank’s Central Coast agribusiness division.

We think the real feather in his cap, however, is his commitment and service to must! charities as an Executive Board member.  Having worked with one of our founders, Eric Jensen of Booker Vineyard, in the early years setting up must! charities’ non-profit incorporation and the mounds of paperwork that come along with that, he has continued to follow must! charities’ progress.

must’s innovative and creative business model appeals to the banker  side of Rob, who appreciates the concept of integrating philanthropy into everyday business plans – responsible, habitual, and planned giving.  Because must’s operating expenses are covered through the Executive Board’s contributions, it allows every dollar generated in fundraising efforts to go directly into must’s programs and ultimately into our community.

“So,” Rob says, “everyone is in it for the right reasons.”  And Rob is no exception.  Despite traveling from branch to branch between Paso Robles and Oxnard on a weekly basis, he maintains his commitment to must! charities dedicating time, energy, and resources to create long-term, sustainable transformation in our community.

“must! is Important Because…”

Black Friday…Small Business Saturday…Cyber Monday…and now Giving Tuesday!

GivingTuesday is a first of its kind effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners – charities, families, businesses and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff to the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world.

So come on! Let’s harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving. We ask you to join must! charities in raising funds on December 2nd, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to DONATE to must! charities. Together we create meaningful results!
